McLays take environmental issues very seriously. Our processes and actions include:
- All inks used in our printing process are vegetable oil based
- Pro-actively work with customers to address the overall 'carbon footprint' involved in the production and delivery of all printed materials
- A stand of trees are dedicated to McLays at Pen-Y-Turnpike Wood, Glamorgan for winning "Best Commitment to Change in Business Practice"

Carbon Quota
As part of our sustainability policy, McLays appointed CarbonQuota to independently assess the accuracy, completeness and consistency of energy use and carbon footprint calculations within the operations under our direct control. They are an independent assessor, focussing on the print and manufacturing industry.
2021 - 2022 is the first reporting year for McLays, and establishes the carbon baseline and intensity ratios for:
- tonnes of CO2e per tonne of substrates purchased
- tonnes of CO2e per £/million of sales revenue
- tonnes of CO2e per metre squared of building
- tonnes of CO2e per FTE.
The results were audited and verified by CarbonQuota, providing a carbon baseline, against which McLays can monitor energy and any carbon reduction initiatives.
Compared to the industry we operate in, as a whole, our carbon footprint and intensity ratio figures are lower than the industry average, and moving forward, our aim is to continuously improve our ratios.

Project Seagrass
Seagrasses are flowering plants that live in shallow sheltered areas along our coast. Estimates suggest we lose an area of seagrass around the same size as two football pitches every hour.
One of the most threatened yet overlooked ecosystems on Earth, seagrass could have a promising future thanks to its ability to absorb carbon.
Seagrass accounts for 10 per cent of the ocean’s capacity to store carbon - so called blue carbon – despite occupying only 0.2 per cent of the sea floor.
McLays are proud to support Project Seagrass in their work to restore and conserve seagrass ecosystems.

Two Sides
McLays are proud to be a member of Two Sides, which is a not-for-profit organisation created in 2008 by members of every stage of the printing and graphics supply chain. Their mission is to promote an understanding of the environmental issues faced by all relevant stakeholders, and to raise awareness of the sustainability of the print, paper, and graphics industry.
Love Paper is a campaign, run by Two Sides, ‘promoting the sustainable and attractive attributes of print, paper and paper packaging’.
Both Two Sides and the Love Paper campaign have provided McLays with information sheets about the sustainability of paper, which are available upon request.
